What helped William Jones overcome his scruples was the salary. 17 The post also made it possible for Jones to marry the clergyman’s daughter he had been courting since his days as an undergraduate – and it came with a knighthood. But what also attracted Jones was that India presented possibilities all but undreamed of in England. Captain Cook’s three voyages to the Pacific had shown what could be accomplished and the companion of Cook’s first voyage, Joseph Banks, had demonstrated how a system of scientific endeavour on the grand scale might be set up – provided there was patronage, sufficient men of like mind and someone capable of directing that enquiry at the centre.

British historians and archaeologists working in India in the nineteenth century were quick to blame the eclipse of Buddhism there on the Muslim conquests. * Already by the ninth century Buddhism as practised by its adherents in India had become so esoteric, so isolated from the wider community as to be unable to compete with revitalised, devotional Hinduism as promoted by the ninth-century reformer Adi Shankaracharya and his followers. However, there is another equally important reason for the failure of Buddhism in India – one that few followers of the Hindutva nationalist movement (which believes that the only good Indian is a Hindu Indian) are prepared to accept: Brahmanical intolerance, which at times was as unbending in its hatred of heresy and heretics as later Muslim hardliners were in their jihads against unbelief and unbelievers.

The word kotla means ‘fort’ but the walls of that fortress are long gone. Cricket has been played here since 1883 and for most Indians Firoz Shah Kotla means one thing: cricket – and nothing else. Few associate the name with Delhi’s Muslim past and fewer still are aware that the huddle of ruins in the shadow of the stadium from which it takes its name contains one of India’s most ancient and most extraordinary relics. Sultan Firoz Shah was the builder of the sixth of the many cities of Delhi. The first is the most doubtful: Indraprastha, celebrated in the Mahabharata epic of ancient India as the capital of the five battling brothers known as the Pandavas.
