In 1984, Caulkins once again qualified for the Olympic team. This time, with the games being held in Los Angeles, the United States was certain to compete. And Caulkins, at 21 and still in her 37 CHADWICK, FLORENCE prime, would be competing in three events, including the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medleys, arguably a swimmer’s most difficult races. Unlike other events, where the swimmer dives into the pool and performs one stroke from the beginning of the race to the end, participants in the medley competition use all four strokes.

Ironically, Brisco-Hooks, who was not an especially disciplined athlete, had chosen as her specialty the 400-meter race, known as the most grueling of the sprint events. The 400-meter race tests the endurance and strength of its runners. The first 200 meters must be run quickly, but the last half of the race is arduous and often painful. Athletes struggle against stiffening joints Valerie Brisco-Hooks exults after winning the 200meter race at the 1984 Olympic Games. After having a baby in 1983, Brisco-Hooks almost retired from sprinting.
